A Transfermative scholar

IN DIALOGUE WITH TRAVESTI THOUGH -EMBRACING FURY, EMBODYING TENDERNESS, TRANSFERMING FUTURES.

Fernando Salinas-Quiroz is an Assistant Professor in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University.

Their work sits at the intersection of psychology, education, transgender studies, and social justice. Rooted in Marlene Wayar’s being in gerund and in the furia and ternura travesti voiced by Susy Shock, Lohana Berkins, and Claudia Rodríguez, Dr. Salinas-Quiroz approaches research, teaching, and community work as practices of transfermation: fierce in resisting erasure, tender in sustaining life.

Her research challenges traditional fixed-sequence theories of human development, emphasizing the fluid and evolving nature of gender identity and expression. She aims to transfem childhood, parenting, schools, and decision-making processes to ensure life-sustaining resources are accessible to all, regardless of institutional legibility.
